ETACRYNIC ACID

Etacrynic acid is a drug that is also known as a loop diuretic. It acts by binding with sulfhydryl groups of kidney cellular proteins and inhibits the reabsorption of sodium and chloride in the kidney tubules, thus increasing the excretion of sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium, and chloride ions, as well as water.

  • Etacrynic acid is used to treat edema and pulmonary edema.
  • Anuria
  • History of severe watery diarrhea
  • Infants

Etacrynic acid may have the following side effects:

  • Fluid/electrolyte loss like hyponatremia, hypokalemia, hypochloremia alkalosis, and hypomagnesaemia
  • Nephrotoxicity
  • Ototoxicity
  • Weight loss
  • Orthostatic hypotension
  • Paresthesia
  • Dizziness
  • Anorexia
  • Jaundice
  • Metabolic alkalosis
  • Tinnitus

Take extra caution in patients with the following medicines:

  • Patient with advanced liver cirrhosis
  • Electrolyte imbalance
  • Hepatic encephalopathy
  • Severe myocardial disease and those undergoing surgery
  • Kidney impairment
  • Children
  • Pregnancy
  • Lactation

 

Interactions

Etacrynic acid may interact with the following medicines:

  • Aminoglycoside antibiotics
  • Cephalosporins
  • Gastric irritants
  • Corticosteroids
  • Anticoagulants
  • Antihypertensive agents
  • Lithium
  • NSAIDs
  • Insulin or other antidiabetic agents
  • Acetazolamide, dichlorphenamide, and methazolamide

Symptoms of overdose include excessive diuresis with electrolyte depletion such as hypokalemia, hypochloremia, hyponatremia and dehydration. Seek medical help immediately.
