MAGNESIUM

Magnesium is a mineral that’s crucial to the body’s function. It helps keep blood pressure normal and make bones stronger. It also makes the heart rhythm steady.

Magnesium is essential for healthy bones, muscle function, normal blood pressure, and proper heart rhythm. People with diabetes tend to be low in magnesium, which is linked to lowered insulin production and more insulin insensitivity.

Magnesium is POSSIBLY UNSAFE when taken in very large amounts. Too much magnesium in the body may cause serious side effects including an irregular heartbeat, low blood pressure, confusion, slowed breathing, coma, and death.

Magnesium supplements can cause nausea, cramps, and diarrhea. It also often cause softening of stool.

Precautions

Before taking Magnesium supllements, you should take note of the following:

  • Magnesium is LIKELY SAFE for children, pregnant or breast-feeding women when taken in doses prescribed by your doctor.
  • Alcohol abuse increases the risk for magnesium deficiency.
  • Magnesium might increase the risk of bleeding or bruising in people with bleeding disorders because it slows blood clotting.
  • Poorly controlled diabetes reduces how much magnesium the body absorbs.
  • The elderly are at risk for magnesium deficiency due to reduced magnesium absorption by the body and often the presence of diseases that also affect magnesium absorption.
  • Magnesium may affect different medical conditions. Tell your doctor if you have heart block, stomach infections, immune diseases, inflammatory bowel disease and/or kidney problems.

Interactions

People who take diuretics, heart medicines, or antibiotics may not be safe to take magnesium. If you are taking any other medicine before taking magnesium, check with your health care provider.

Signs of a magnesium overdose can include nausea, diarrhea, low blood pressure, muscle weakness, and fatigue. At very high doses, magnesium can be fatal.
