WHEAT INTOLERANCE

Wheat intolerance is the inability of the body to digest gluten. Gluten is the primary component of wheat and which often causes the problem. Wheat intolerance is often mistaken with wheat allergy. Although they may share some of the symptoms, wheat allergy can result to a serious allergic reaction. Another difference is that wheat intolerance have a delayed onset of symptoms, can be up to 2 or 3 days later.

Gluten is one of the most complex protein eaten by man. It is because human beings, unlike farm animals, do not have the biological equipment to fully break down this protein. That is why gluten intolerance may be a common digestion problem.

Symptoms of wheat intolerance include:

  • Bloating
  • Belly pain
  • Diarrhea
  • Nausea
  • Feeling unwell, including tiredness

The following are less common symptoms of gluten intolerance:

  • Stomach pain (more specific than belly pain)
  • Anxiety
  • Headache
  • Confusion
  • Numbness
  • Joint or muscle pain

DIAGNOSIS

The doctor may diagnose wheat intolerance based on the symptoms you’ve experienced after consuming wheat or any other products that have gluten. Blood tests and skin tests may help to rule out other conditions that shares the same symptoms such as wheat allergy.

 

TREATMENT

Medications like anti-histamine or supplements may give temporary treatment for wheat intolerance. However, there is no drug that would permanently allow you to remove wheat intolerance. Pain relievers can provide you relief on some of the symptoms associated with the intolerance.

 

PREVENTION

The best way to prevent wheat intolerance is to avoid consuming wheat or other gluten-products.
