Vitamin B6

Vitamin B6 Helps Boost Your Immune System

Vitamin B6 is an essential vitamin that provides many benefits to the body. Also known as pyridoxine, it is important for normal brain development and for keeping your nervous system healthy. Vitamin B6 also performs vital functions that boost your immune system.

Your immune system needs Vitamin B6 to produce cytokines and T-lymphocytes. Cytokines are proteins that regulate your body’s response to disease and infection. T-lymphocytes are a special kind of white blood cells, which serve as “soldiers” who search out and destroy disease-causing germs.

Food sources of vitamin B-6 include poultry, fish, potatoes, chickpeas and bananas.

Most people get enough vitamin B6 in their diet. However, there are people who are at higher risk of developing vitamin B6 deficiency. These include those with:

  • liver disease
  • kidney disease
  • digestive or autoimmune diseases
  • smokers
  • obese people
  • alcoholics
  • pregnant women

Vitamin B6 supplementation may be an option for such people.

Vitamin B6 supplements are available in oral capsule, tablet or liquid formats.

Consult your doctor before taking any multivitamin-mineral supplement.
