TURF TOE

Turf toe is a common sports injury wherein ligaments around the big toe joint are sprained. This happens if the big toe is repeatedly pushed off forcefully such in running and jumping.

Shoes that doesn’t provide adequate support for the foot is a big factor. Injury often occurs in athletes who wears flexible soccer-style shoes because this type allows the foot to bend too far forward.

Symptoms of Turf toe depends on the severity of the injury.

Grade 1

  • Symptoms are Mild
  • Typically no Black and Blue Discoloration
  • Minor Swelling and Confined Tenderness

Grade 2

  • Symptoms are Moderate
  • Limited Big Toe Motion
  • Mild Limp when Weight is Applied
  • Slight Black and Blue Discoloration
  • Tenderness and Swelling are Dispersed
  • Symptoms Intensify within 24 Hours

Grade 3

  • Symptoms are Severe
  • Pain upon Touch
  • Significant Swelling
  • Limited Big Toe Motion
  • Unable to Put Weight on Hurt Foot
  • Dispersed Black and Blue Discoloration

DIAGNOSIS

Your doctor will first ask for some background, like your participation in sports or if you have foot problems, and you how you injured your foot.

Your doctor might perform:

  • Physical Exam- The doctor will note the pattern and location of any swelling and comparing the injured foot to the uninjured one.
  • X-ray or MRI- Is used to confirm the diagnosis.

 

TREATMENT

Turf toe are usually not severe. In that case, treatments may include:

  • Rest
  • Icing the Injured Part
  • Compressing
  • Elevating the Leg
  • Oral Medications such as Ibuprofen to Control the Pain
  • Using a Cast to Keep the Foot Immobile

In most grade III injury, a surgery might be needed. Two to three weeks after the pain subside, you may refer to a physical therapist to strengthen and condition your injured toe.
