TOENAIL FUNGUS

Visible symptoms of a toenail fungal infection include:

• Scaling underneath the nail known as subungual hyperkeratosis
• White or yellow streaks on the nail known as lateral onychomycosis
• A crumbling corner or tip of the nail known as distal onychomycosis

Over-the-counter products aren’t typically used to deal with nail infections because they don’t provide reliable results.

Instead, your health practitioner may also prescribe an oral antifungal drug, which includes:

• Terbinafine
• Itraconazole
• Fluconazole
• Griseofulvin

You can also use different antifungal remedies, along with antifungal nail lacquer or topical applications. These treatments are brushed onto the nail like how you apply nail polish. Depending on the type of fungus causing the infection, as well as the extent of the infection, you could use those medicines for many months. Topical treatments aren’t usually effective in treating toenail fungal infections.
