TESTICULAR DISORDERS

Testicular disorders, along with penis disorders, are the main disorders that influence the external reproductive organs of males. The disorder of the testes and penis could impact a men’s fertility and sexual behavior. 

Having an issue with the testes could lead to severe diseases, such as sexual problems, hormonal imbalance, and infertility. Moreover, some of the usual conditions that influence the testicles are testicular torsion, epididymitis, testicular cancer, hypogonadism, and testicular trauma. 

TYPES

  • Testicular Trauma. This is commonly an injury to either both or one testicle. This is a common condition for athletes in combat sports or people who received heavy impact on one or both testicles.
  • Testicular Cancer. This occurs when the abnormal cells around the testicles split up and develop. In other instances, non-cancerous tumors might progress and will turn into cancer.
  • Epididymitis. This refers to the inflammation or swelling of the epididymis. The epididymis is the tube placed behind the testicles that convey and store sperm. When this tube turns out to be swollen or inflamed, it could cause swelling or pain in the testicles.
  • Hypogonadism. This is when the sex glands (gonads) make few or no hormones. 

SYMPTOMS

Here are the symptoms for the different types of testicular disorders:

Testicular Trauma

  • Bruising
  • Severe pain
  • Swelling
  • Nausea
  • Blood in the urine
  • Fever
  • Problem in urinating

Testicular Cancer

  • Enlargement in either one or both testicles
  • A dull ache in the lower abdomen
  • Severe pain and discomfort in the scrotum or testicles
  • Lump
  • Pulling sensation

Epididymitis

  • Sudden pain in either both or one testicle
  • Feeling of warm and tender in the testicles
  • Swollen and inflamed
  • Pain 
  • Lump 

Hypogonadism

  • Hot flashes
  • Lack of menstruation
  • Loss of body hair
  • Low sex drive
  • Slow breast development
  • Muscles loss
  • Erectile dysfunction
  • Reduced development of testicles and penis
  • Fatigue
  • Infertility
  • Osteoporosis
  • Problems in concentrating

DIAGNOSIS

In diagnosing testicular disorders, your doctor may do a physical examination and ask about your symptoms and medical history. Afterward, he/she might request the following tests:

  • Blood tests
  • Imaging tests
  • A swab of your urethra
  • Urinalysis

TREATMENT

The treatment of testicular disorders varies on the severity and type of the condition. Some conditions do not require any treatment, and some need immediate medical treatment or surgery. Furthermore, some treatment of testicular disorders include:

  • Medication: Antibiotics, NSAIDs, Hormone replacement therapy
  • therapy/rest
  • Cold or ice packs
  • Scrotal elevation or support
  • surgery
