Supplements for Heart Health

Research shows that some supplements provide heart health benefits. Here are six supplements that may help keep your heart healthy:

Fish oil

Fish oil is rich in omega-3 fatty acids, which can reduce levels of artery-clogging triglycerides and may also help lower blood pressure.

Fiber supplements

Fiber supplements, can lower LDL or the so-called “bad cholesterol” while raising levels of HDL or “good cholesterol”. Make sure to gradually increase your fiber supplement to help prevent gas and cramping. Drink more water when you increase your fiber intake.

Garlic supplements

Human studies show that garlic supplements can significantly lower blood pressure in people with hypertension. However, a person would have to take a fairly high dose of garlic supplement – equivalent to about four cloves of garlic per day – to achieve the desired result.

Green tea extract

Research shows that green tea extract may lower LDL cholesterol and triglycerides, while increasing HDL cholesterol levels.

Sterols and stanols

Sterols and stanols hinder the body’s absorption of dietary cholesterol. Naturally present in foods like nuts and grains, sterols and stanols are also added to many fortified foods, such as some margarines, orange juice, and yogurts. Sterols and stanols are available as supplements. A meta-analysis found that supplementation of plant sterols/stanols (in tablets and capsules) was associated with clinically significant reductions in LDL cholesterol levels.

Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10)

CoQ10 is a nutrient that occurs naturally in the body; it is also present in many foods we eat. CoQ10 supplements may help lower blood pressure on its own or as an adjunct to anti-hypertension medications.
