Vitamin A, also known as retinol, helps repair sun-damaged skin and may help protect against melanoma (skin cancer). Studies show that people who took daily vitamin A supplements were 60 percent less likely to develop melanoma than those who did not take retinol supplements.
The B-complex vitamins have been shown to improve skin aging and help the body produce healthy new skin cells. Some studies suggest that vitamin B9 (folate) improves signs of skin aging while vitamin B3 (niacinamide) may help reduce the appearance of age spots and other forms of skin discoloration.
Vitamin C helps skin tissue grow and repair itself. It has potent antioxidant properties that protect your skin from oxidative damage caused by the sun and the environment. Studies show that vitamin C may help prevent and treat photodamage caused by the sun’s ultraviolet rays.
Also known as the “sunshine vitamin”, Vitamin D increases the skin’s thickness thereby reducing wrinkle formation. It also protects your skin against sun damage.
Vitamin E helps protect your skin from oxidative damage (harm sustained by cells and tissues that are unable to keep up with free radical production), which contributes to wrinkle formation and premature aging.
Collagen is a major component of your skin. It helps strengthen skin, and contributes to its elasticity and hydration. However, as you age your body produces less collagen, which results in dry skin and wrinkles. Several studies have shown that collagen supplements may help slow skin aging by reducing wrinkles and dryness.
Glutathione is a powerful antioxidant that provides many health benefits, such as reducing oxidative stress (an imbalance between harmful free radicals and antioxidants) and stimulating the immune system. In tablet form, glutathione has become a popular skin whitening agent. It lightens skin by converting the skin pigment melanin to a lighter color and deactivating the enzyme that helps produce the pigment.
Consult your doctor before taking any multivitamin-mineral supplement.
