STYRAMATE

Styramate is a muscle relaxant and anticonvulsant drug. At therapeutic doses, it does not produce significant sedative effects.

This drug is used to treat many conditions such as headache, muscle aches, arthritis, backache, toothaches, colds, and fevers. It relieves pain in mild arthritis but has no effect on the underlying inflammation and swelling of the joint.

Avoid sudden withdrawal. Do not use during pregnancy and lactation.

Use with caution in those with psychiatric disorders, neurological disorders and in those with gastrointestinal disorders.

Side effects include the following:

  • Dizziness
  • Drowsiness
  • Weakness
  • Nervousness
  • Hallucinations
  • Depression
  • Vomiting
  • Dry mouth
  • Constipation
  • Diarrhea
  • Stomach pain
  • Heartburn
  • Increased muscle spasms
  • Back pain
  • Rash
  • Sweating
  • Tingling sensation in the arms, legs, hands, and feet

Precautions

Extra precaution should be observed with the following conditions:

  • Psychotic disorders
  • Schizophrenia
  • Confusional states
  • Parkinson’s disease
  • Cerebrovascular or resp insufficiency
  • History of autonomic dysreflexia
  • History of gastro duodenal ulcers
  • Pre-existing sphincter hypertonia
  • Renal and hepatic impairment
  • Elderly, children

 

Interactions

Styramate may interact with the following medicines:

  • Morphine
  • TCAs
  • Antihypertensives
  • Levodopa

Over dosage of the drug may give rise to the increase in the side effects such as dizziness, drowsiness, nervousness, depression, and other neurological symptoms.
