RABIES IMMUNOGLOBULIN

Rabies immunoglobulin is a vaccine that is able to provide passive immunity to rabies viral infection. The two types of rabies immunoglobulin vaccines are human rabies immunoglobulin or HRIG and purified equine rabies immunoglobulin or ERIG. The former, HRIG is created from the plasma of humans who are immunized with rabies vaccine and is the preferred form of rabies vaccine. It is usually given as an injection in the muscles.

Rabies immunoglobulin is used in the prevention of rabies virus infection after an animal bite. It may also be given as an injection to adults or children.

Rabies immunoglobulin should not be given to people with the following medical conditions:

  • People who had previous vaccination with rabies vaccine, so that the immunologic response to this vaccine is decreased

Rabies immunoglobulin may give rise to the following side effects:

  • Soreness at the injection site
  • Fever
  • Chest or joint pain
  • Dyspnoea
  • Tremor
  • Dizziness
  • Swelling or edema of the face
  • Glossitis
  • Mouth ulceration
  • Anaphylactic reactions

Precautions

Rabies immunoglobulin should not be given to people with the following medical conditions:

  • Hypersensitivity to human immune globulin preparations
  • Specific immunoglobulin A deficiency
  • Low platelet count or thrombocytopenia
  • Bleeding disorders
  • Pregnancy
  • Breastfeeding

 

Interactions

Rabies immunoglobulin may have the following drug interactions:

  • Live virus vaccine such as measles, mumps, rubella and varicella
