Description: Pentazocine is a benzomorphan derivative with mixed opioid agonist and antagonist actions. It alters perception of and response to pain by working in the brain and nervous system to decrease pain

How to use pentazocine

  • Always refer to your doctors instructions before taking this medication. Duration and dosage will be determined by your medical condition and its response to the medication. Make sure to take this medication in the prescribed amount and time period even after symptoms disappear. Discontinuing the medication before completion of treatment may cause incomplete treatment of condition. If Symptoms persist, consult your doctor
  • Given as an injection at your doctor’s office, hospital, or clinic by a licensed health care provider.

    • Dizziness; drowsiness; exaggerated sense of well-being; lightheadedness; nausea; redness, swelling, or irritation at injection site; vomiting.

    • Severe allergic reactions (rash; hives; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue); blurred vision or other vision problems; confusion; fainting; hallucinations; seizures; trouble sleeping; trouble urinating; unusual weakness;

Precautions

  • Inform your doctor
    • Allergy to the medication or to any other codeine- or morphine-related medicine (eg, codeine, oxycodone) or any other allergies
    • Medical History of lung problems (eg, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, cor pulmonale), liver or kidney problems, a blockage of your bladder or bowel, trouble urinating, an enlarged prostate, the blood disease porphyria, or seizures, or if you are having stomach or intestinal surgery, high blood pressure, low thyroid function, heart problems (eg, heart attack, irregular heartbeat), recent head injury, brain disease, increased pressure in the brain, or brain growths or tumors, mental or mood problems, suicidal thoughts or behaviors, or a history of drug abuse
      • a current pregnancy or planning to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding
  • May cause dizziness or drowsiness. Limit alcohol intake
  • If you are planning to be pregnant or think you may be pregnant, discuss the risks and benefits of use with your doctor.
  • It is unknown if this drug passes into breast milk. Before breast-feeding, consult your physician.
  • May develop dependence or addiction when used in high doses or when used for long periods of time
  • Widthrawal sypmtoms may occur when the drug is suddenly discontinued. Symptoms include:
    • anxiety; diarrhea; fever, runny nose, or sneezing; goose bumps and abnormal skin sensations; hallucinations; nausea; vomiting; pain; rigid muscles; rapid heartbeat; shivering or tremors; sweating; and trouble sleeping.

 

Interactions

Taking multiple drugs may affect how medications work and/or cause unwanted side effects. List down all the medications you are taking and inform your physician and pharmacist. Do not take, discontinue, or alter any dose of medications without prior approval of your physician.

  • Naltrexone, Cimetidine or sodium oxybate (GHB), Sibutramine

Overdose

If overdose is suspected, contact a poison control center or emergency room immediately.

Missed Dose

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is near the time of the next dose, skip the missed dose and as soon as you remember, take a regular dose or if the time of the next dose is near, wait for it before taking another dose and resume your usual schedule. Do not increase the dose to compensate for the missed dose.

  • Room temperature between 15 and 30 degrees C
  • Do not expose to light and moisture
  • Do not store in the bathroom
  • Keep all medications away from pets and children
