NALMEFENE

Nalmefene is a drug that is known as a specific opioid antagonist. It is structurally related to naltrexone. It affects opioid receptors in such a way that the cortico-mesolimbic functions are also changes and the level of alcohol consumption is lessened. It is being used to treat alcohol dependence and abuse. It is taken by mouth.

Nalmefene is a medicine that is used in the treatment of alcohol dependence.

Nalmefene should not be given in people with the following conditions:

  • Recent opioid addiction
  • Acute opioid withdrawal symptoms
  • History of acute alcohol withdrawal syndrome
  • Severe liver and kidney problems
  • Concomitant use w/ opioid agonists (e.g. opioid analgesics, methadone) or partial agonists (e.g. buprenorphine)

Nalmefene may bring about the following side effects:

  • Psychiatric symptoms
  • Alcoholic psychosis
  • Alcohol withdrawal symptoms
  • Dizziness
  • Insomnia
  • Headache
  • Sleep disorder
  • Confusional state
  • Restlessness
  • Somnolence
  • Tremor
  • Attention disturbance
  • Paraesthesia
  • Hypoaesthesia
  • Fatigue
  • Asthenia
  • Malaise
  • Abnormal feeling
  • Hallucinations
  • Dissociation
  • Tachycardia
  • Palpitation
  • Nausea
  • Decreased appetite
  • Vomiting
  • Dry mouth
  • Diarrhoea
  • Decreased libido
  • Decreased weight
  • Muscle spasms
  • Hyperhidrosis

Precautions

Take extra caution in people with the following conditions:

  • Patient with psychiatric comorbidity (e.g. major depressive disorder)
  • History of seizure disorders
  • Mild or moderate kidney or liver problems
  • Pregnancy
  • Breastfeeding

 

Interactions

Nalmefene may interact with the following medicines:

  • UGT2B7 enzyme inhibitors (e.g. diclofenac, fluconazole)
  • UGT2B7 enzyme inducers (e.g. dexamethasone, phenobarbital)
  • Opioids (e.g. cough medications, opioid analgesics)
