MYCOTIC DISEASES

Mycotic diseases, often known as fungal infections, are any diseases or conditions caused by fungi. They often cause harm to your nails, hair, skin, and mucous membranes, but they may also infiltrate your lungs or other organs. A fungal infection may affect anybody, even those who are generally healthy. Fungal spores are prevalent in the environment, and people inhale or come into contact with them regularly without getting sick. However, these fungi are more likely to cause sickness in immunocompromised individuals.

TYPES

Any portion of your body is susceptible to acquiring a skin fungal infection. The following are some of the most frequent:

  • Athletes’ foot is usually linked with sports and athletes because the fungus thrives in warm, wet conditions such as locker rooms, socks and shoes, and sports equipment.
  • Jock itch is a slightly infectious fungus generally disseminated by direct touch with an infected person or object.
  • Yeast infections are a prevalent form of Candida overgrowth in females and are often caused by Candida albicans.
  • Ringworm is a type of skin illness caused by a fungus that grows on dead tissues, including the skin, hair, and nails.

SYMPTOMS

Mycotic diseases can be minor or severe. The symptoms depend on the infecting fungus.

Common symptoms:

  • aches and pains
  • asthma symptoms
  • chest pain
  • fatigue
  • headache
  • itchy/scaly skin
  • loss of weight
  • night sweats

Because the symptoms of fungal illnesses might be confused with those of other ailments, you must visit your primary care physician for a comprehensive examination and evaluation.

DIAGNOSIS

The location of fungal illness on your body influences how your healthcare practitioner identifies it. They may check for fungus in your samples or try to cultivate (culture) fungus from them.

  • Fluids around your brain and spinal cord (CNS fluid)
  • Nails
  • Eye fluid (secretions)
  • Phlegm (sputum)
  • Blood
  • Vaginal discharge
  • Skin or other affected tissues
  • Urine

If physicians think that you have mycotic diseases in your brain, lungs, or other internal organs, they may use MRI, X-rays, or CT scans to look for signs of infection.

TREATMENT

To treat mycotic diseases, your doctor may prescribe antifungal medication such as:

  • Drops for the eyes
  • Lozenges or mouthwash
  • Oral medicines (pills)
  • IV medication is administered intravenously at a physician’s clinic or hospital.
  • Powder, lotion, or cream
  • Shampoo
