Mezlocillin, a broad-spectrum ureidopenicillin, limits the last cross-linking step of peptidoglycan formation via binding and inactivation of transpeptidases, hence inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis. It is potent against a broad variety of gram-negative pathogens; however, it is less effective against P. aeruginosa than piperacillin or azlocillin.
