MAJOR HEAD INJURY

Major head injury is a severe form of head injury which oftenly requires immediate medical attention. It is defined as being in unconscious state for 6 hours or more and having a post-traumatic amnesia of 24 hours or more.

The symptoms of a severe head injury include many of the symptoms of minor head injuries. They can also include:

  • loss of consciousness
  • seizures
  • vomiting
  • balance or coordination problems
  • serious disorientation
  • inability to focus the eyes
  • abnormal eye movements
  • loss of muscle control
  • persistent or worsening headache
  • memory loss
  • changes in mood
  • leaking of clear fluid from the ear or the nose
  • bleeding from one or both ears
  • reading or writing problems
  • balance problems or difficulty walking

DIAGNOSIS

Diagnosis of major head injury is based on the physical examination and result of imaging tests in the form of X-rays, CT scans or MRI’s.

 

TREATMENT

  • Medication – Antiseizure medication are given in the week following your accident to avoid risk of seizures. Diuretics are used to relieve pressure from the brain by allowing you to excrete more fluids.
  • Surgery – Surgery may be used to repair skulls or remove hematoma in the brain.
  • Rehabilitation – Rehabilitation may be needed to help you regain full brain function.

 

PREVENTION

If possible, avoid certain areas or activities that will put you in an accident. If not, wear protective gear and be cautious of your actions. As for the children at home, make your house as accident-free as possible.
