INFLUENZA A H9N2

Influenza A H9N2 is a subtype of the species Influenza A virus that cause harm to birds. It is believed to be endemic to Asia.  Most human cases exposed to the virus may acquire it from direct contact with the contaminated bird or environment. However, according to the World Health Organization (WHO) this strain of virus have low ability to sustained transmission to humans. Hence transmission among humans is also low.

Symptoms of Influenza may include other flu-like symptoms such as:

  • Fever
  • Cough
  • Shortness of Breath

DIAGNOSIS

Like other Influenza viruses, diagnosing this subtype may be done through lab tests.

 

TREATMENT

No vaccine has been developed to specifically prevent Influenza A H9N2.

 

PREVENTION

Hand hygiene and respiratory hygiene are the best way to get rid of the virus or to prevent it from spreading. Always wash your hands before, during and after you prepare food. When coughing or sneezing, cover your mouth or nose.
