IBOPAMINE

Ibopamine is a peripheral dopamine agonist with vasodilating properties and a weak positive inotropic effect. It stimulates α- and β-adrenoceptors at high concentrations. It induces mydriasis and it also has been investigated for use in the treatment of congestive heart failure.

This medication is used to treat a mild heart failure for adults. A different formulation of this drug helps to treat Mydriasis.

This drug should not be used together with volatile anaesthethics because it can increase its cardiac effects.

Aside from the benefits, this drug may bring some unwanted effects. It is important to tell your doctor all the symptoms that you experience while using this drug, especially if any of the following:

  • Palpitations
  • Tachycardia
  • Arrhythmias
  • Reflex Bradycardia
  • Hypotension
  • Dizziness
  • Fainting
  • Anxiety
  • Fear
  • Restlessness
  • Insomnia
  • Confusion
  • Irritability
  • Headache
  • Psychotic Symptoms
  • Dyspnoea
  • Weakness
  • Anorexia
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Difficulty In Micturition and Urinary Retention
  • Piloerection
  • Sweating
  • Increased Salivation
  • Hyperglycaemia
  • Hypokalaemia
  • Muscle Tremor

Precautions

Before taking this drug, tell your doctor or pharmacist:

  • If you are allergic to it or if you have any other allergies.
  • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • If you are to undergo any surgical procedure.
  • If you are taking herbal, prescription and non-prescription drugs.
  • If you have certain medical conditions such as:
    • Prostate Disorders
    • Occlusive Vascular Disease
    • Cardiac Arrhythmias
    • Cardio Vascular Diseases
    • Hyperthyroidism

 

Interactions

Drug interactions may either lessen the effectiveness of this drug or heighten the risk for severe side effects. It’s important to inform your doctor all the medication including prescription and non-prescription and herbal medicines you are taking or going to take.

Possible interactions with this drug are:

  • Volatile Anaesthetics
  • Thyroid Hormones
  • Cardiac Glycosides
  • Antiarrhythmics
  • Antihypertensives
  • Guanethidine
  • Α-Blockers
  • Nonselective Β-Beta Blockers
  • Levodopa
  • Bromocriptine
  • Amiodarone

Call emergency hotline if someone has overdosed and has serious symptoms such as passing out or trouble breathing.
