HALOTHANE

Halothane belongs to the class of halogenated hydrocarbons and is generally used as anesthetics.It works by depressesing both cerebral function and sympathetic activity. It also suppresses salivary, bronchial and gastric secretions and dilates the bronchioles.

This medication is used for the induction and maintenance of general anaesthesia.

This drug act in the brain and causes temporary state of unconsciousness. Avoid activities requiring alertness or clear vision such as driving until you are sure you can perform such activities safely. Limit the use of alcohol and certain other medications that cause drowsiness.

Common side effects may include:

  • Nausea
  • Irregular Heartbeat
  • Jaundice or Severe Liver Damage
  • Abnormally High Fever
  • Vomiting
  • Heart attack

Precautions

Before taking this drug, tell your doctor or pharmacist:

  • If you are allergic to it or if you have any other allergies.
  • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • If you are taking herbal, prescription and non-prescription drugs.
  • If you have certain medical conditions such as:
    • Malignant Hyperthermia
    • Raised CSF Pressure
    • History of Unexplained Jaundice or Acute Hepatic Damage from Previous Exposure to Halothane

 

Interactions

Drug interactions may either lessen the effectiveness of this drug or heighten the risk for severe side effects. It’s important to inform your doctor all the medication including prescription and non-prescription and herbal medicines you are taking or going to take.

Possible interactions with this drug are:

  • Non-Depolarising Muscle Relaxants
  • Hypotensive Agents (e.g. Hexamethonium Bromide, Trimetaphan Camsilate)

Call emergency hotline if someone has overdosed and has serious symptoms such as passing out or trouble breathing.
