GADOPENTETIC ACID

Gadopentetic Acid has has a contrast-enhancing effect mediated by the di-N-methylglucamine salt of gadopentatate-the gadolinium complex of the pentetic acid. This drug works by increasing the image contrast of certain tissues through the increase of the signal and intensity induced by the shortening of the spin-lattice relaxation time of excited atomic nuclei of the gadolinium ion.

This medication is used for enhancing the image of cranial and spinal structures, of the whole body and of the gastro-intestinal tract and for the evaluation of renal function.

Gadopentetic acid should administered in patients with severe renal impairment, epilepsy, hypotension, history of hypersensitivity, asthma or other allergic respiratory disorder.

Common side effects of this drug are:

  • Headache
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Transient Sensations of Heat or Cold and Taste Disturbances
  • Transient Increase in Serum-Iron and Bilirubin Concentrations

Possible fatal, although rare, side effects include:

  • Convulsions
  • Hypotension
  • Allergic Or Anaphylactoid Reactions And Shock

Before taking this drug, tell your doctor or pharmacist:

  • If you are allergic to it or if you have any other allergies.
  • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • If you are to undergo any surgical procedure.
  • If you are taking herbal, prescription and non-prescription drugs.
  • If you have certain medical conditions such as:
    • Severe Renal Impairment
    • Epilepsy
    • Hypotension
    • History of Hypersensitivity
    • Asthma or Other Allergic Resp Disorders

Call emergency hotline if someone has overdosed and has serious symptoms such as passing out or trouble breathing.
