FEMALE PATTERN HAIR LOSS

Female pattern hair loss is a common condition that affects a lot of women. It is otherwise known as androgenetic alopecia, which is a condition characterized by thinning hair on the crown and top of the scalp. This can also lead to a receding hairline.

The exact cause of female pattern hair loss is not fully understood, but it is thought to be related to genetics and hormonal changes.

SYMPTOMS

Female pattern hair loss symptoms includes:

  • Thinning hair on the crown and top of the scalp
  • Widening part line
  • Receding hairline
  • Hair shedding or loss during washing or brushing
  • Reduced hair density or volume
  • Hair that appears finer or shorter than usual
  • Visible scalp through the hair

It’s worth noting that not everyone will experience all of these symptoms, and the severity of symptoms can vary from person to person.

DIAGNOSIS

If your hair is thinning, see your doctor. Your doctor may check your hair and scalp and may suggest that you see a dermatologist. Without doing any tests, your doctor can often identify female pattern hair loss.

Your doctor could suggest a hormone test if you have acne, irregular periods, or a lot of body hair.

Moreover, your doctor can also advise cutting a very little amount of skin from your scalp to test for further hair loss issues if it’s unclear what is causing your hair loss.

TREATMENT

Treatments might consist of:

Medications: Products like minoxidil (Rogaine®) are generally the first treatment for female pattern hair loss. Oral finasteride (Propecia®) may treat female pattern hair loss. Your doctor may recommend finasteride with ketoconazole-containing 2% shampoo.

Hair transplant: A medical professional transfers skin grafts from parts of your body that still have healthy hair follicles to your scalp’s bald or thinning patches.

Platelet-rich plasma: To promote hair growth, a medical professional draws blood from your body, processes it, and then injects it into your scalp.

Red light treatment: To promote hair growth, your doctor may apply low-wavelength red light to your scalp.

Styling methods: You may use certain hairstyles like wigs to conceal female pattern hair loss.

Your healthcare professional will work with you to identify the best course of therapy.
