EYELID PROBLEMS

EYELID PROBLEMS

An eyelid is a thin layer of skin that covers and protects the eye. The eye contains a muscle that retracts the eyelid to “open” the eye either voluntarily or involuntarily. Human eyelids contain a column of eyelashes that shield the eye from residue particles, outside bodies, and sweat.

TYPES

If your eyelid is swollen, it could be one of the following:

  • Pinkeye (conjunctivitis)- a disease brought about by microscopic organisms, infections, or allergies
  • Style- a disease regularly begins where you eyelash connects with your eye or in the tear glands. It can cause red lumps around your eyelid that can be sore.
  • Chalazion- is a little bump on your eyelid like an eye blister that is brought about by blocked oil organs.
  • Hypersensitivities-it can make your eyelids swell every now and then.
  • Blepharitis– this is when microorganisms and oil flakes get into the base of your eyelashes.
  • Graves’ disease – is a condition, which affects your thyroid and your immune system

SYMPTOMS

Symptoms of eyelid problems include the following:

  • Bothersome, flaky or sticky eyelids
  • Swelling from a nearby damage
  • Itching
  • Drooping
  • Jerking or flickering eyelids every once in a while

DIAGNOSIS

In diagnosing eyelid problems, your doctor will first examine both of your eyelids and eyes. He or she will utilize a magnifying lens during the examination and to come up with a correct diagnosis.

See an ophthalmologist if:

  • You’re stressed over an eyelid issue
  • You believe it’s an inflammatory response
  • It’s deteriorating or persistent for quite a while
  • You are uncomfortable
  • You have yellow knots or spots around your eyes
  • You have a rash on your body
  • Having a high temperature, or feel hot and shivery, or you feel unwell
  • The side of your neck, armpits or groin feel swollen and painful (swollen lymph nodes)

TREATMENT

Treatment of the eyelid problems includes lubrication of the eye with artificial tear drops and lubricating ointments.

Plastic wrap, fixed to the skin with ointment, might be placed over the eye region in the night to make a damp chamber for the eye. Surgeries are performed in patients with eyelid paralysis.
