DIAGNOSIS
Many tests are used to diagnose ENT disorders. You must be ready to tell your doctor about all the signs and symptoms you have experienced to have an accurate diagnosis.
Diagnosis of Ear Infections
An otoscope is used if you have ear infections. It is to visualize the outer ear and eardrum. The ear will mostly become red and swollen if there is an infection.
Diagnosis of Swimmer’s Ear
The outer ear and ear canal may become red if you have swimmer’s ear. Your doctor will get a fluid sample for culture if they see that your ear canal has pus or if the skin becomes scaly and is shedding.
Diagnosis of Sinus Infections
An endoscope is used through the nose to visualize the opening of the sinus cavity and to allow your ENT doctor to take a sample for sinus culture if sinus infection is suspected.
Diagnosis of Strep Throat
A throat culture is taken by your ENT doctor to diagnose a strep throat. It is performed by brushing a cotton swab against the back of the throat. If the result becomes positive, antibiotics will be started.
However, your ENT doctor may still make the diagnosis based on classic signs and symptoms and he may treat you presumably even without a swab.
Diagnosis of Sleep Apnea
When diagnosing sleep apnea, a brief and complete medical history will be discussed with your ENT doctor. A sleep study will also be advised after your doctor will notice enlarged tonsils.
Polysomnogram is another sleep study that is used to diagnose sleep apnea. It measures not only the amount of oxygen in your blood but also brain activity, eye movements, and muscle activity, as well as your breathing and heart rate.
TREATMENT
Your ENT disorders will be treated based on your signs and symptoms and the severity of your condition. These treatments include:
- Cochlear implants
- Hearing aids
- Nasal reconstruction
- Neuromonics
