ENT DISORDERS

ENT disorders can affect a person’s quality of life and can cause some serious health problems if left untreated. This is because we use our ears, nose and throat on a daily basis. Our ears are used for hearing and can also provide us with a sense of balance as it is one of our sensory organs. The nose is used for smelling and can also provide a sense of taste; this is also where we breathe air. The throat is where the air reaches the lungs; it functions as a route for water and food to enter our digestive system.

An otolaryngologist specializes on ENT disorders. It is advisable to see this doctor if you are experiencing serious ear, nose, or throat problems.

TYPES

Tonsillitis

Tonsillitis is often a cause of infections and inflammation of the tonsils from colds, strep throat and other infectious agents. This can cause intense throat pain if left untreated for a long time. Persons with tonsillitis can experience difficulties with swallowing and breathing.

Ear Infections

When germs enter the ear and become trapped there, ear infections can occur. Small kids usually get ear infections. If this infection is left untreated, it can cause more serious problems like difficulty in hearing and speech problems. Ventilation tubes may be needed for children with more severe ear infections.

Sinus Infections

Sinusitis happens when the cavities in the skull that surround the eyes and nose become infected with viruses and bacteria.

Sleep Apnea

Sleep apnea is a brief cessation of breathing while asleep. It can occur in both adults and children.

DIAGNOSIS

Many tests are used to diagnose ENT disorders. You must be ready to tell your doctor about all the signs and symptoms you have experienced to have an accurate diagnosis.

Diagnosis of Ear Infections

An otoscope is used if you have ear infections. It is to visualize the outer ear and eardrum. The ear will mostly become red and swollen if there is an infection.

Diagnosis of Swimmer’s Ear

The outer ear and ear canal may become red if you have swimmer’s ear. Your doctor will get a fluid sample for culture if they see that your ear canal has pus or if the skin becomes scaly and is shedding.

Diagnosis of Sinus Infections

An endoscope is used through the nose to visualize the opening of the sinus cavity and to allow your ENT doctor to take a sample for sinus culture if sinus infection is suspected.

Diagnosis of Strep Throat

A throat culture is taken by your ENT doctor to diagnose a strep throat. It is performed by brushing a cotton swab against the back of the throat. If the result becomes positive, antibiotics will be started.

However, your ENT doctor may still make the diagnosis based on classic signs and symptoms and he may treat you presumably even without a swab.

Diagnosis of Sleep Apnea

When diagnosing sleep apnea, a brief and complete medical history will be discussed with your ENT doctor. A sleep study will also be advised after your doctor will notice  enlarged tonsils.

Polysomnogram is another sleep study that is used to diagnose sleep apnea. It measures not only the amount of oxygen in your blood but also brain activity, eye movements, and muscle activity, as well as your breathing and heart rate.

TREATMENT

Your ENT disorders will be treated based on your signs and symptoms and the severity of your condition. These treatments include:

  • Cochlear implants
  • Hearing aids
  • Nasal reconstruction
  • Neuromonics
