ENFLURANE

Enflurane is non-flammable liquid used as general inhalation anesthetic drug. Enflurane is used to provide analgesia during birth delivery either normal or caesarean.

This medication, alone or together with other drugs, is used as a general anesthesia during operations or birth delivery. Enflurane may also be used in other conditions to be determined by your doctor.

Enflurane has been associated with rare increases in serum potassium levels or hyperkalemia. Use of this drug should be properly administered and monitored.

This drug may have unwanted effects such as:

  • Shivering
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Elevation of the white blood count

Notify your doctor promptly if any of these symptoms persist or worsen.

More serious side effects include:

  • Hypotension
  • Respiratory Depression
  • Hypoxia
  • Malignant hyperthermia
  • Seizures

Your doctor may have prescribed this medication because he or she judged that the benefit to you is greater than the risk of side effects.

Precautions

Before taking this drug, tell your doctor or pharmacist:

  • If you are allergic to it or if you have any other allergies.
  • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • If you are to undergo any surgical procedure.
  • If you are taking herbal, prescription and non-prescription drugs.
  • If you have certain medical conditions.

 

Interactions

Drug interactions may either lessen the effectiveness of this drug or heighten the risk for severe side effects. It’s important to inform your doctor all the medication including prescription and non-prescription and herbal medicines you are taking or going to take.

Possible interactions with this drug are:

  • Nondepolarizing Relaxants
  • Propofol
  • Atracurium (Besylate)
  • Diazoxide
  • Isoniazid

If overdosage is suspected, stop administering the drug. Provide the patient with clear airway and initiate assisted or controlled ventilation with pure oxygen.
