ELCATONIN

Elcatonin is a synthetic analogue of eel calcitonin that treats  diseases characterized by high bone turnover by inhibiting osteoclastic bone resorption. They are also given as an adjunct in the treatment of severe hypercalcaemia, especially that associated with malignancy. Some calcitonins are used in the management of osteoporosis

This medication is used to treat Paget’s disease of bone and as an adjunct in the treatment of severe hypercalcaemia.

Pregnant and lactating women should not use this drug without the advise of the doctor.

Side effects may include:

  • GI disturbances; tingling of the hands; skin rash; unpleasant taste; inflammatory reactions at Inj site; urinary frequency; tremor; transient hypocalcaemia (parenteral).

Precautions

Before taking this drug, tell your doctor or pharmacist:

  • If you are allergic to it or if you have any other allergies.
  • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • If you are to undergo any surgical procedure.
  • If you are taking herbal, prescription and non-prescription drugs.
  • If you have certain medical conditions such as renal impairment and heart failure

 

Interactions

Drug interactions may either lessen the effectiveness of this drug or heighten the risk for severe side effects. It’s important to inform your doctor all the medication including prescription and non-prescription and herbal medicines you are taking or going to take.

Possible interactions with this drug are:

  • Cardiac Glycosides

Call emergency hotline if someone has overdosed and has serious symptoms such as passing out or trouble breathing.
