DIAPHRAGM BIRTH CONTROL

DIAPHRAGM BIRTH CONTROL

Diaphragm birth control is a small, reusable tool made of either rubber or silicone. It is shaped like a cup or dome with flexible rims that cover the cervix to prevent the sperm from invading the uterus during sexual intercourse.

A prescription from a health care provider is needed in order to use a diaphragm. Additionally, they will provide you with the correct size for the traditional ones. However, there is currently a new version called the Caya diaphragm that comes in one size.

The diaphragm birth control is placed deep inside the vagina, where the rim fits tightly behind the pubic bone. For effectivity in preventing pregnancy, it should be used with spermicide.

TYPES

Several types of diaphragm include:

  • Arching spring diaphragm
  • Coil spring diaphragm
  • Flat spring diaphragm
  • Wide seal rim diaphragm

SYMPTOMS

The diaphragm is not compatible with anyone. For some people, it may cause discomforts, infections, and serious complications. Below is a list of symptoms that one should be wary of.

  • Showing signs of allergy or vaginal irritation
  • Showing signs of the urinary tract and vaginal infections

Furthermore, an appointment with a health care provider is necessary when:

  • It becomes out of place when walking, straining, sneezing, or coughing
  • The presence of blood in the diaphragm is not a result of a menstrual period
  • Experiencing pain after using the diaphragm. The partner may also experience pain
  • Exhibiting signs of toxic shock syndrome, which include sudden high fever, dizziness, vomiting, diarrhea, rashes, and fainting
  • Difficulties in removing the diaphragm

DIAGNOSIS

When a woman decides to use a diaphragm, the health care provider will teach her how to insert and remove it. She will be required to practice doing it herself while the health care provider performs a pelvic exam to ensure that it is in the correct position.

TREATMENT

The diaphragm may last up to two years. It is important to always inspect the diaphragm for puncture marks, cracks, and holes to ensure its effectiveness.

In the long run, there might be instances where a health care provider must inspect the diaphragm. These instances may include:

  • When it no longer fits tightly and comfortably
  • After giving birth
  • After a surgery
  • After gaining or losing more than 10 pounds
  • When there is repeated urinary tract infections
  • When feeling pain during sex
