DIABETES, TYPE 1

DIABETES, TYPE 1

Type 1 diabetes, also known as juvenile diabetes or insulin-dependent diabetes, is a serious condition in which the pancreas creates no insulin. Insulin is a hormone expected to enhance sugar (glucose) to enter cells to deliver energy.

Various factors, including genes and some infections, may add to type 1 diabetes. Despite the fact that type 1 diabetes usually shows up in childhood, it can develop in adults.

In spite of increasing research, type 1 diabetes has no treatment. Treatment centers around controlling glucose levels with insulin, diet and lifestyle changes to counteract complications.

Symptoms

Type 1 diabetes signs and symptoms can show up all of a sudden and may include:

  • Increased thirst
  • Frequent urination
  • Bedwetting in kids who don’t wet the bed during the night
  • Extraordinary hunger
  • Unintended weight loss
  • Irritability and other mood changes
  • Fatigue and weakness
  • Blurred vision

Diagnosis

If you are diagnosed to have diabetes, your doctor may run blood tests to check for antibodies that are usual in type 1 diabetes. These tests help your doctor recognize type 1 and type2 diabetes when the analysis is unsure. The presence of ketones, which result from the breakdown of fat in your urine likewise suggests type 1 diabetes, instead of type 2.

Treatment

Treatment for type 1 diabetes includes:

  • Using insulin
  • Sugar, fat and protein assessments
  • Frequent blood sugar monitoring
  • Eating healthy foods
  • Exercising regularly and maintaining a healthy weight

Any individual who has type 1 diabetes needs lifetime insulin treatment.

Types of insulin are numerous and includes the following:

  • Short-acting (regular) insulin -Humulin R and Novolin R
  • Rapid-acting insulin- Apidra, Humalog and Novolog
  • Intermediate-acting (NPH) insulin- Novolin N, and Humulin N
  • Long-acting insulin- Lantus, Toujeo, and Solostar
