Description: Dapsone is folic acid synthesis inhibitor and prevents bacterial utilization of PABA.

Dapsone is used to treat dermatitis herpetiformis (skin disorder), Hansen’s disease. It decreasing swelling (inflammation) and stopping the growth of bacteria, but not for viral infections..

How to use dapsone
Take by mouth with or without food, usually once daily or as directed by your doctor.

Take Dapsone and your medications for heartburn/reducing stomach acid (e.g., large amounts of antacids, ranitidine, famotidine) separately as the absorption of the drug may be affected.Follow the presrcibed dosage based on your medical condition to get the best treatment outcome.

Warnings not available

Side effects may range from mild to serious complications.  Consult your doctor immediately when you feel the following symptoms: nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, dizziness, or blurred vision, fast heartbeat, unusually fast breathing, bluish lips/skin, chest pain, mental/mood changes, muscle weakness, difficulty urinating, very serious low blood counts (bone marrow suppression) or liver disease, signs of an infection (e.g., fever, chills, persistent sore throat), easy bruising/bleeding, unusual tiredness, pale skin, yellowing eyes/skin, dark urine, stomach/abdominal pain.

Seek emergency medical help if you expereince allergies (rash, itching/swelling (especially of the face/tongue/throat), severe dizziness, trouble breathing) or the symptoms mentioned above while taking this drug.

Inform your doctor of your allergies (food or drugs), medical conditions and  medical history before taking this drug, especially of: severe anemia, certain blood disorders (e.g., G6PD deficiency, methemoglobin reductase deficiency), liver disease, severe heart disease, severe lung disease, serious infection, very high blood sugar (diabetic ketosis).

Do not perform activities that require alertness such as driving and using machinery because thid drug can make you dizzy.

For pregnant and nursing (breastfeeding) women, consult your doctor before using this medication.

Before using this drug, tell your doctor of the current medications, products (herbal/nonprescription) that you are taking especially of: folic acid antagonists (such as pyrimethamine), nitrofurantoin, primaquine. This drug could also affect contraceptive pills.

Overdose
Get emergency help immediately, if you suspect overdose. Symptoms of overdose may include: seizures, bluish skin (cyanosis), sudden vision changes, sudden loss of vision.

Missed Dose
Take it as soon as you remember.  Do not increase the dose to catch up. If it is less than 6 hours until the next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your usual dosing schedule.

Storage
Store at room temperature between 68-77 degrees F (20-25 degrees C) away from light and moisture. Do not store in the bathroom. Keep all medicines away from children and pets.

Do not flush medications down the toilet or pour them into a drain unless instructed to do so. Properly discard this product when it is expired or no longer needed. Consult your pharmacist or local waste disposal company for more details about how to safely discard your product.
