Colistimethate sodium is a drug that turns into a substance named colistin, which in turn, acts as a detergent that is able to enter bacterial cells to destroy the membrane and cause cell death. It is used in the treatment of bacterial infections.

Colistimethate sodium is used in the treatment of severe infections from gram negative bacteria, Pseudomonas bacteria and other infections.

In people with kidney disease, dosage should be reduced.

Colistimethate sodium may have side effects such as:

  • Difficulty of breathing
  • Cough
  • Kidney problems
  • Nerve problems
  • Confusion or psychosis
  • Sensation problems
  • Vertigo
  • Slurred speech
  • Sore mouth or throat
  • Gastrointestinal upset
  • Bleeding problems
  • Joint pains
  • Visual disturbances
  • Ringing of the ears
  • Skin rashes
  • Pain and local irritation
  • Fever
  • Antibiotic-associated colitis
  • Pseudomembranous colitis


Special precautions should be observed by people with the following conditions:

  • Myasthenia gravis
  • Porphyria
  • Kidney problems

This medicine should not be given to children, infants, pregnant women and breastfeeding women.



Colistimethate sodium may interact with the following medicines:

  • Aminoglycosides
  • Amphotericin B
  • Bacitracin
  • Capreomycin
  • Cefazedone
  • Methoxyflurane
  • Polymyxin B
  • Vancomycin
  • Non-depolarising muscle relaxants (e.g. tubocurarine)
  • Sodium picosulfate

Overdose symptoms may include weakness and difficulty of breathing. Seek immediate medical help if you think you have taken more Colistimethate sodium than recommended.
