CHIKUNGUNYA

Chikungunya is a rare viral infection transmitted by the bite of an infected mosquito. It is characterized by a rash, fever, and severe joint pain (arthralgias). Because of its effect on the joints, Chikungunya has been classified among the Arthritic Viruses. It primarily occurs in tropical areas of the world.

Symptoms of chikungunya starts 3-7 days after being bitten.  Symptoms for chikungunya is almost similar to dengue infection, except for the joint pains, the following are the symptoms:

  • Fever
  • Rash
  • Joint pain and swelling
  • Headache
  • Muscle pain

DIAGNOSIS

See your doctor if you are presenting with symptoms described above (see Types and Symptoms section).  Inform your doctor if you have recently traveled.  To look for chikungunya and other similar diseases, the doctor will order blood tests.

 

RECOMMENDED MEDICATIONS

There is no medication to treat chikungunya virus infection. To decrease the symptoms, get plenty of rest, drink fluids to prevent dehydration, and take medicines, such as ibuprofen, naproxen, paracetamol, to relieve fever and pain.
