CALCIUM ACETATE

Calcium acetate is a drug that acts to gather phosphate in the intestines by creating phosphates that are insoluble and that can be excreted in the feces. It this reduces blood phosphate levels, especially in patients with secondary hyperparathyroidism.

Calcium acetate is used in the treatment of hyperphosphataemia.

Calcium acetate should not be given to patients with the following medical conditions:

  • End stage renal failure
  • Taking other calcium supplements
  • Hypersensitivity to calcium

Calcium acetate can give rise to side effects such as the following:

  • Gastrointestinal irritation

Precautions

Extra caution should be observed in patients with the following conditions:

  • Chronic hemodialysis
  • Kidney problems
  • Diseases associated with hypercalcaemia such as sarcoidosis and some malignancies
  • Kidney stones (nephrolithiasis)

Calcium acetate can interact with the following medicines:

  • Tetracycline antibiotics
  • Thiazide diuretics
  • Vitamin D
  • Corticosteroids
  • Bisphosphonates
  • Fluoride
  • Fluoroquinolones

Signs of overdose include the following:

  • Progressive hypercalcemia
  • Vascular calcification
  • Other soft-tissue calcification
