BORNHOLM DISEASE

Bornholm disease, also known as Pleurodynia, is caused by a virus and brings pain in the chest or upper tummy and flu-like symptoms. This disease can be spread from person to person and often affects children and young adults.

An outbreak in a community is likely to happen with this disease. Symptoms usually cleared up in a few days but in some cases they take much longer (up to three weeks).

Severe stabbing chest pain that tends to go with episodes lasting 15-30 minutes is the main symptom of Bornholm disease.  The pain can make it difficult to breathe and the affected area may be tender in very severe cases.

Other symptoms of this disease may include:

  • Cough
  • Headache
  • Tummy Pain
  • Fever
  • Sore Throat
  • Aching Muscles

These symptoms usually start suddenly and last for a few days or sometimes longer (up to three weeks), or they can come and go for a few weeks before eventually clearing up.

DIAGNOSIS

Diagnosis of the diseases is made based on the symptoms and doctor’s examination. It can be easily recognized if there’s already an outbreak in the community.  Some tests are done not to confirm the disease but to rule out others that may be the cause of your symptoms. Blood test determines the presence of the virus that causes it.

TREATMENT

The infection commonly clears up on its own so there’s really no specific treatment for it. Over the counter pain killers such as Paracetamol and Ibuprofen may help to relieve other symptoms, especially in dealing with the pain.

Newborn babies at risk of getting Bornholm disease may be treated with immunoglobin to make the effects of the virus less severe and help prevent complications. This is only offered on the advice of a specialist.
