BALL OF FOOT PAIN

Metatarsalgia causes ache and irritation in the ball of the foot. Strenuous activity or badly-fitting footwear are the usual causes. Older people or people with narrow, arched or flat feet are at higher risk.

Treatment can be through:

  • Pain relievers
  • Changes to greater comfy shoes
  • Inserts for the shoes to alleviate pressure at the ball of the foot

1. Morton’s neuroma is thickening of the tissue across the nerve usually between the third and fourth toes. Foot pain, unusual sensations or numbness over the ball of the foot are the usual signs and symptoms. It is more often seen in ladies and may be a result of wearing excessive heels or tight shoes.

Treatment can be through:

  • Pain relievers
  • Surgery (extreme cases)
  • Shoe inserts to reduce pressure at the nerve
  • Steroid injection, or a path of injections, into the region of foot ache

2. Sesamoiditis happens when tendons across the big toe are injured and inflamed.

Treatment for sesamoiditis consists of:

  • Wearing a foot pad below the toe in a secure shoe
  • Wearing low-heeled shoes
  • Steroid injections may be beneficial in some cases
  • Rest
  • Ice

DIAGNOSIS

Various foot issues can show signs and symptoms just like the ones in metatarsalgia. To help determine the cause of the pain, your medical doctor will have a look at your foot even as you stand and at the same time as you sit down and ask anything regarding your lifestyle and daily activities. You might need an X-ray to identify a strain fracture or other foot issues.

TREATMENT

Protective measures along with resting, changing shoes or the usage of a metatarsal pad is probably all you need to relieve signs and symptoms.

In rare instances, while protective measures don’t relieve your pain and your metatarsalgia is complex by way of foot conditions which includes hammertoe, surgical treatment to realign the metatarsal bones is probably an alternative.

Home remedies

  • Rest
  • Ice the affected area
  • Take an over-the-counter pain reliever
  • Wear proper shoes
  • Use metatarsal pads
  • Consider arch supports
