BACXAL/BACXAL DS

Bacxal//Bacxal DS is used in the following conditions:

  • Bacterial infections, including urinary tract infections, bronchitis, ear infections, travelers diarrhea, and some sexually transmitted diseases
  • Prevent certain infections in people with weakened immune systems, such as those with HIV/AIDS

This medicine may be recommended for different uses. Approach your physician or pharmacist for more information.

Do not use Bacxal//Bacxal DS in people with the following conditions:

  • Hypersensitivity
  • Severe liver or kidney disease
  • Those with a history of blood disorders such as megaloblastic anemia
  • Severe allergies to sulfonamides or other antibiotics such as amoxicillin
  • Pregnant women or in children under the age of three months

Bacxal//Bacxal DS may have the following side effects:

  • Nausea, vomiting, headache, loss of appetite, and skin rash
  • Rare side effects may include anemia, confusion, fever, hallucinations, jaundice, and seizures
  • Long-term use of co-trimoxazole may also increase the risk of developing an infection or other serious health problems.

Keep in mind that your physician has recommended this drug since he or she has known that the advantage to you is more noteworthy than the risk of adverse reactions. Many individuals utilizing this medicine don’t have serious side effects.

A serious allergy to this medication is uncommon. In any case, seek emergency medical help if you see any manifestations of a serious allergic response, including a rash, tingling or swelling particularly of the face or tongue or throat, dizziness or difficulty in breathing.

Precautions

Take extra caution in patients with the following medical conditions:

  • Talk to your doctor if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding, as it is not recommended for use in these cases.

Interactions

Bacxal//Bacxal DS may interact with the following medicines:

  • Warfarin: Co-trimoxazole can increase the effects of warfarin, leading to an increased risk of bleeding
  • Digoxin: Co-trimoxazole may increase the risk of digoxin toxicity
  • Methotrexate: Co-trimoxazole may increase the risk of methotrexate toxicity
  • Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs): Co-trimoxazole may increase the risk of gastrointestinal bleeding when taken with NSAIDs
  • Cimetidine: Co-trimoxazole may increase the effects of cimetidine, leading to an increased risk of side effects.

Inform your physician about the drugs you take including over-the-counter medications, prescribed drugs, supplements and vitamins.
