ALPHA-LIPOIC ACID

Description: Alpha-lipoic acid,  also known as thioctic acid has antioxidant activity and activity in enhancing biological energy production.

Possibly Effective for:

  • Coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery
  • Diabetes/ Prediabetes/ Diabetic nerve pain
  • Vitiligo
  • Weight loss
  • Wound healing

Taken by mouth, intravenously, or topically (applied to skin).

Side effects of this medication include, rash and decreased blood sugar.

Precautions

Pregnant and breastfeeding women must consult their doctor before taking this drug.  Diabetic, alcoholic, and thiamine deficient patients must also take caution.  Alpha-lipoic acid may also interfere with thyroid treatments.

 

Interactions

Alpha lipoic acid may interact with cancer and anti diabetes drugs.

Overdose

Get emergency medical help when overdose is suspected.
