ORCIPRENALINE

Orciprenaline is a direct acting sympathomimetic with predominantly β2-adrenoceptor stimulant activity and it has minimal effects on heart rate.

Orciprenaline is used in the long term management of reversible airways obstruction, acute bronchospasm and bradycardia.

Avoid using in patients with cardiac arrhythmias associated with tachycardia.

Orciprenaline may bring about side effects such as the following:

  • Tachycardia
  • Nervousness
  • Increased serum glucose
  • Increased potassium levels
  • Tremor
  • Palpitation
  • Headache
  • Dizziness
  • Insomnia
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Bad taste
  • Heartburn
  • Xerostomia
  • Trembling
  • Muscle cramps
  • Weakness
  • Coughing
  • Pharyngitis
  • Increased diaphoresis
  • Paradoxical bronchospasm
  • Hypertension
  • Chest pain
  • Angina
  • Drowsiness
  • Diarrhoea
  • Taste change

Take precautions in patients with the following conditions:

  • Heart disease (e.g. arrhythmia, hypertension, CHF)
  • Diabetes mellitus
  • Glaucoma
  • Hyperthyroidism
  • Hypokalaemia
  • Seizure disorders
  • Pregnancy and lactation
  • β-blockers e.g. propranolol
  • Inhaled ipratropium
  • MAOIs
  • TCAs
  • Sympathomimetics
  • Halothane

Orciprenaline overdose may bring about symptoms such as the following:

  • Tachycardia
  • Tremor
  • Hypertension
  • Angina
  • Seizures
  • Hypokalaemia
