ALGINIC ACID

Alginic acid is used as a combination drug with histamine H2-antagonist in managing gastro-oesophageal reflux disease. It forms a viscous gel by reacting with gastric acid and reduces acid reflux by acting as a mechanical barrier.

Alginic acid is used in treating gastroesophagal reflux disease.

A patients with diabetes or hypertension needs to be warned about few drug interactions. A patient with known hypersensitivity needs to be careful about the reactions or anaphylactic shock. Certain medications should be warned to a pregnant woman or a breastfeeding woman. A few drugs should be avoided by a patient with hepatitis or cardiac disease.

Side effects do not only differ from drug to drug, but it also depends on the dose of the drug, the individual sensitivity of the person, brand or company which manufactures it. Seek for a doctor’s advice if you feel or notice some adverse drug reactions.

Take extra precautions in patients with the following conditions:

  • Pregnant and breastfeeding
  • Known penicillin hypersensitivity
  • Liver disease
  • Heart disease
  • Kidney disease

When a drug is taken in normal dose the process goes without any difficulties, but when taken in an overdose, the body is not able to metabolize it or send it out properly which causes the effects of an overdose.
