AORTIC STENOSIS

Aortic stenosis can have the following symptoms:

• Abnormal heart rhythms (arrhythmias)
• A bluish tint to the skin, lips and fingernails (cyanosis)
• Shortness of breath
• Tiring quickly upon exertion
• Swelling of body tissue or organs (edema)

DIAGNOSIS

The doctor will obtain a medical history and do a physical exam. Tests that will be ordered may include the following:

• Electrocardiogram (ECG)
• Chest X-ray
• Echocardiogram
• Transesophageal echocardiogram
• Pulse oximetry
• Exercise stress test
• Cardiac CT scan or MRI
• Cardiac catheterization

TREATMENT

Aortic stenosis can be treated with the following:

• Regular checkups and monitoring
• Medications
• Implantable heart devices
• Special procedures using catheters
• Open-heart surgery
• Heart transplant
