VACCINE, CHOLERA

Cholera vaccine is used for immunization against cholera, a disease caused by Vibrio cholerae bacteria. It contains antigens derived from the said bacteria that will cause immune response and production of antibodies against the disease. It prevents the cholera toxin from binding to the layers of the intestine and prevent diarrhea.

Cholera vaccine is used for active immunization against cholera.

Cholera vaccine should not be used in people with hypersensitivity to this vaccine.

Cholera vaccine can give rise to the following side effects:

  • Shedding and transmission
  • Altered immunocompetence
  • Dizziness
  • Tiredness
  • Fatigue
  • Gastrointestinal discomfort
  • Diarrhoea
  • Abdominal pain
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Anorexia
  • Fever

Precautions

Caution should be observed in immunocompromised patients and in children as well as pregnant or lactating women.

 

Interactions

Cholera vaccine may diminish the therapeutic effects of antibiotic and chloroquine.

If you have used Cholera vaccine more than the recommended dose, seek medical help immediately.
