DESERPIDINE

Deserpidine is a drug that causes depletion of noradrenaline stores in sympathetic nerves. It also causes the depletion of catecholamine and serotonin stores in the brain, heart, and in other organs. This further results to a decrease in blood pressure and heart rate and further gives rise to central nervous system depression. There is also decreased cardiac output and peripheral resistance in the blood vessels.

Deserpidine is used in the treatment of:

  • Dyskinesias
  • Hypertension
  • Schizophrenia

Do not use Deserpidine in the following conditions:

  • Patients receiving electroconvulsive therapy
  • Depression or a history of depression
  • Active peptic ulcer or ulcerative colitis
  • Parkinson’s disease

Deserpidine may have the following side effects:

  • Nasal congestion
  • Headache
  • Central nervous system symptoms
  • Gastrointestinal disturbances
  • Respiratory distress
  • Cyanosis
  • Anorexia and lethargy may occur in infants whose mothers have received deserpidine prior to delivery
  • Flushing
  • Bradycardia
  • Severe depression
  • Extrapyramidal effects
  • Breast engorgement
  • Galactorrhoea
  • Gynaecomastia
  • Increased prolactin concentrations
  • Decreased libido
  • Impotence
  • Sodium retention
  • Edema
  • Decreased or increased appetite
  • Weight gain
  • Miosis
  • Dry mouth
  • Sialorrhoea
  • Dysuria
  • Rashes
  • Pruritus
  • Thrombocytopaenic purpura

Precautions

Extra caution should be observed in people with the following conditions:

  • Debilitated or elderly patients
  • Cardiac arrhythmias
  • Heart attack
  • Kidney problems
  • Gallstones
  • Epilepsy
  • Allergic conditions
  • Pheochromocytoma

 

Interactions

Deserpidine may interact with the following medicines:

  • Adrenaline
  • Sympathomimetics
  • Thiazide diuretics
  • Other antihypertensives
  • MAOIs
  • Digitalis
  • Quinidine
  • Central nervous system depressants
