DENOSUMAB

Denosumab is a drug that is known as a monoclonal antibody. It is able to bind to the receptor activator of nuclear factor kappa-B ligand (RANKL), thus preventing the activation from its receptor, RANK. It inhibits osteoclast formation and decreases bone resorption.

Denosumab is used in the treatment of osteoporosis in postmenopausal women. It is also used to increase bone mass in men with osteoporosis. Denosumab is also used to treat hypercalcaemia of malignancy, giant cell tumour of bone and bone metastases associated with solid tumours.

Denosumab should not be given to patients with low blood levels of calcium (hypocalcaemia) and those who are pregnant.

Precautions

Take extra caution in patients with the following conditions:

  • Patient with impaired immune system
  • Disturbances of mineral metabolism
  • Severe kidney impairment including dialysis patients
  • Lactation

 

Interactions

Denosumab may interact with the following medicines:

  • Belimumab
  • Immunosuppressants
