DEMOXYTOCIN

Demoxytocin is a drug that is known as a synthetic analogue of oxytocin. It causes uterine contractions and can be used to induce or augment labor.

Demoxytocin is used in labor induction and augmentation.

Demoxytocin should not be given to the following conditions:

  • Fetal distress
  • Significant cephalopelvic disproportion
  • Unfavorable presentation of the fetus
  • Excess uterine distention
  • Children >4
  • Elderly multiparae
  • Previous uterine surgery
  • Severe toxaemia
  • Amniotic fluid embolism
  • Hypertonic uterine contractions
  • Placenta praevia
  • Cord presentation or prolapsed
  • Mechanical obstruction to delivery
  • Predisposition to uterine rupture

Demoxytocin may have the following side effects:

  • Postpartum bleeding
  • Neonatal jaundice
  • Water retention
  • Acute transient hypotension with flushing
  • Reflex tachycardia
  • Death
  • Anaphylactic reactions
  • Fatal afibrinogenaemia
  • Maternal deaths from severe hypertension
  • Subarachnoid haemorrhage

Precautions

Extra caution should be observed in the following conditions:

  • Borderline cephalopelvic disproportion
  • Patients greater than 35 years old
  • Resistant uterine inertia
  • Severe preeclampsia
  • Severe cardiovascular disorders

 

Interactions

Demoxytocin may interact with the following medicines:

  • Prostaglandins
  • Anaesthetics
  • Sympathomimetics

If you have used Demoxytocin more than the usual dosage, seek medical help immediately.
