LANSOPRAZOLE

Lansoprazole is a drug that belongs to a class of medicines known as substituted benzimidazoles. It is also known as a proton pump inhibitor because it can block acid secretion by inhibiting H+/K+ ATPase enzyme system in gastric parietal cells. Both basal and stimulated acid are inhibited.

Lansoprazole is used in the following conditions:

  • Acid-related dyspepsia
  • Gastroesophageal reflux disease
  • Erosive oesophagitis
  • Peptic ulcer
  • H.pylori infection
  • NSAID-associated ulceration
  • Zollinger-Ellison syndrome

Lansoprazole should not be given concomitantly with rilpivirine and atazanavir.

Lansoprazole may have the following side effects:

  • Increased risk of Clostridium difficile-associated diarrhoea (CDAD)
  • Risk of osteoporosis-related fractures
  • Diarrhoea
  • Abdominal pain
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Flatulence
  • Constipation
  • Headache
  • Dry mouth
  • Peripheral oedema
  • Dizziness
  • Sleep disturbances
  • Fatigue
  • Paraesthesia
  • Arthralgia
  • Myalgia
  • Rash
  • Pruritus
  • Pancreatitis
  • Glossitis
  • Tremor
  • Anorexia
  • Restlessness
  • Impotence
  • Petechiae
  • Purpura
  • Taste disturbance
  • Stomatitis
  • Hepatitis
  • Jaundice
  • Hypersensitivity reactions (e.g. bronchospasm)
  • Fever
  • Depression
  • Hallucinations
  • Confusion
  • Gynaecomastia
  • Interstitial nephritis
  • Hyponatraemia
  • Hypomagnesaemia
  • Blood disorders (e.g. leucopenia, leucocytosis, pancytopenia, thrombocytopenia)
  • Visual disturbances
  • Sweating
  • Photosensitivity
  • Alopecia
  • Colitis
  • Increased serum cholesterol or triglyceride
  • Anaphylaxis
  • Stevens-Johnson syndrome
  • Toxic epidermal necrolysis

Precautions

Lansoprazole should be used with caution in those with gastric cancer, liver problems, and those who are pregnant or breastfeeding.

  • Ketoconazole

  • Methotrexate
  • Antacids
  • Sucralfate
  • Rilpivirine
