LACIDIPINE

Lacidipine belongs to a class of drug called calcium channel blocker  that works by slowing the movement of calcium through the muscle cells that are found in the walls of blood vessels. This medication generally acts on the heart and blood vessels.Calcium helps the muscle contract so by blocking Calcium, it relaxes the muscle cells in the walls of arteries causing it to widen.

This medication is indicated to treat high blood pressure (hypertension). This medication may also be used in other conditions to be determined by your doctor.

People should avoid intake of grape juice while using this drug. Lacipidine may cause dizziness, drowsiness or blurred vision. Avoid activities requiring alertness or clear vision such as driving until you are sure you can perform such activities safely. Limit the use of alcohol and certain other medications that cause drowsiness.

Common side effects of this drug include:

  • Flushing
  • Palpitations (Abnormal Awareness Of Your Heart Beat)
  • Headache
  • Dizziness
  • Worsening Chest Pain (Angina)
  • Muscle Cramps
  • Skin Rash
  • Ankle Swelling
  • Upset Stomach
  • Feeling Sick
  • Increase In The Amount Of Urine That You Pass
  • Feeling Weak
  • Changes In Blood Tests Relating To Your Liver
  • Swelling Of The Gums
  • Mood Changes
  • Low Blood Pressure

 

Notify your doctor promptly if any of these symptoms persist or worsen.

 

Serious side effects may include:

  • Severe Allergic Reaction
  • Severe Chest Pain
  • Weak Pulse
  • Rapid Shallow Breathing
  • Cold Clammy Skin
  • Blue Lips
  • Severe Dizziness
  • Fainting

 

Seek immediate medical attention if you experience any of these serious side effects. Call your doctor if you experience other symptoms while using this drug.

Precautions

Before taking this drug, tell your doctor or pharmacist:

  • If you are allergic to it or if you have any other allergies.
  • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • If you are to undergo any surgical procedure.
  • If you are taking herbal, prescription and non-prescription drugs.
  • If you have certain medical conditions such as:
    • Liver problems
    • Irregular Heart Beat or other Heart Problems
    • Uncontrolled Chest Pain (Unstable Angina)
    • Aortic Stenosis
    • History of Heart Attack (Myocardial Infarction)
    • Cardiogenic Shock
    • A Hereditary Blood Disorder called Acute Porphyria
    • Galactose Intolerance
    • Lapp Lactose Deficiency
    • Glucose-Galactose Malabsorption

 

Interactions

Drug interactions may either lessen the effectiveness of this drug or heighten the risk for severe side effects. It’s important to inform your doctor all the medication including prescription and non-prescription and herbal medicines you are taking or going to take.

Possible interactions with this drug are:

  • Grapefruit Juice
  • Other Drugs for Hypertension
  • Anti-Arrythmic Drugs
  • Tricyclic Antidepressants
  • Sleeping Tablets or Sedatives
  • Antibiotics such as Erythromycin, Clarithromycin
  • Medicines to Treat Epilepsy
  • Antifungal Medicines like Itraconazole, Ketoconazole
  • Tetracosactide and Corticosteroids
  • Antihistamines
  • Cimetidine

Call emergency hotline if someone has overdosed and has serious symptoms such as passing out or trouble breathing.
