DIMERCAPROL

Dimercaprol is used to remove a heavy metal from the blood. This chelating agent is used to treat metal poisoning such as arsenic, gold or mercury. Dimercaprol together with Edetate Disodium (EDTA) is used to treat lead poisoning.

Dimercaprol, alone or with combination with other drugs, is indicated to treat poisoning caused by the presence of heavy metals in the blood such as lead, mercury, and arsenic. This medication may also be used in other conditions to be determined by your doctor.

This medicine contains peanut oil. Tell your doctor if you have a peanut allergy.

Common side effects of this drug include:

  • Weakness
  • Headache
  • Fever (especially in children)
  • Pain or a hard ump where the medicine was injected

Notify your doctor promptly if any of these symptoms persist or worsen.

Precautions

Before taking this drug, tell your doctor or pharmacist:

  • If you are allergic to it or if you have any other allergies.
  • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • If you are to undergo any surgical procedure.
  • If you are taking herbal, prescription and non-prescription drugs.
  • If you have certain medical conditions such as liver or kidney problems.

Drug interactions may either lessen the effectiveness of this drug or heighten the risk for severe side effects. It’s important to inform your doctor all the medication including prescription and non-prescription and herbal medicines you are taking or going to take.

  • Paracetamol (Acetaminophen)
  • Solu-Cortef (Hydrocortisone)
  • Vitamin K (Phytonadione)
  • Vitamin K1 (Phytonadione)
