PINCHED NERVE

Pinched Nerve refers to the pain and disruption of the nerve’s function caused by pressure from surrounding tissues, bones, cartilage, muscles or tendons. This may occur in any part of the body and may be a result of numerous conditions such as:

  • Injury
  • Stress from Repetitive Work
  • Rheumatoid or Wrist Arthritis
  • Hobbies or Sports Activities
  • Obesity

Signs and symptoms may include:

  • Sharp, Aching or Burning Pain
  • Numbness or Decreased Sensation in the Area Supplied by the Nerve
  • Muscle Weakness in the Affected Area
  • Tingling, Pins and Needles Sensations (Paresthesia)

DIAGNOSIS

In most cases, pinched nerves are diagnosed due to the symptoms. Aside from knowing the history, the doctor will perform a physical exam to locate the pinched nerve. For more serious cases, imaging tests will help in determining the extent of the damage.

TREATMENT

Treatment for pinched nerve may include:

  • Medications- NSAID such as Apirin and Ibuprofen, Narcotics, Oral corticosteroids and Steroid injections would help reduce swelling and pain.
  • Splint – A soft collar limits motion and allows muscles to rest for brief periods.
  • Physical Therapy – This would help to stretch and strengthen muscles.
  • Surgery – This option applied to severe cases of pinched nerve.

  • Exercise regularly. Incorporate flexibility and strength to your daily routine.
  • Limit repetitive activities. If not avoided, try to take frequent breaks.
