DEBRISOQUINE

Debrisoquine is an antihypertensive drug similar to guanethidine that is used to treat hypertension. It works by selectively inhibiting transmission in postganglionic adrenergic nerves to prevent  the release of noradrenaline at nerve endings.

This medication is used mainly to treat hypertension. Debrisoquine may also be used in other conditions to be determined by your doctor.

Abrupt cessation may lead to rebound hypertension.

Common side effects of this drug may include:

  • Headache
  • Diarrhoea
  • Drowsiness
  • Postural Hypotension
  • Failure of Ejaculation
  • Fluid Retention
  • Nasal Decongestion

Precautions

Before taking this drug, tell your doctor or pharmacist:

  • If you are allergic to it or if you have any other allergies.
  • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • If you are to undergo any surgical procedure.
  • If you are taking herbal, prescription and non-prescription drugs.
  • If you have certain medical conditions such as Phaeochromocytoma and heart failure.

 

Interactions

Drug interactions may either lessen the effectiveness of this drug or heighten the risk for severe side effects. It’s important to inform your doctor all the medication including prescription and non-prescription and herbal medicines you are taking or going to take.

  • Alcohol
  • Adrenaline
  • Amfetamine
  • Other Sympathomimetics
  • TCAs
  • MAOIs
  • Phenothiazine Derivatives And Related Antipsychotics
  • Oral Contraceptives
  • Digoxin or Other Digitalis Derivatives
  • Thiazide Diuretics
  • Other Antihypertensives
  • Levodopa

Call emergency hotline if someone has overdosed and has serious symptoms such as passing out or trouble breathing.
