MEPHENESIN

Mephenesin is a centrally acting muscle relaxant which may be used as an antidote for strychnine poisoning. It helps relieve painful muscle spasms.

Mephenesin belongs to a group of drugs used to produce muscle relaxation. They have their primary clinical and therapeutic uses in the treatment of muscle spasm and immobility associated with sprains, strains, neck injuries and back injuries. They have been prescribed for many health conditions that have skeletal muscle hyperactivity, like the muscle spasms that can present in multiple sclerosis.

This medicine is contraindicated in patients with acute porphyria.

As to pregnancy, there’s no reliable knowledge on its effects if administered throughout pregnancy. For that reason, the use of this drug is not encouraged during pregnancy. This is also not recommended to be used during breastfeeding. This drug should be used by adults only.

This drug can give rise to side effects such as:

  • Drowsiness
  • Weakness
  • Loss of appetite
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting

Precautions

This medicine may impair the ability to drive or operate machinery.

 

Interactions

There may be additive CNS effects with CNS depressants such as barbiturates, alcohol and opioids.

Overdosage could result to visual disturbances, motor incoordination, hypotonia, hypotension and respiratory paralysis. The treatment for this is supportive.
