LIDOCAINE AND MENTHOL

Lidocaine with menthol briefly relieves minor pain related to arthritis, simple backache, bursitis, tendonitis, muscle lines, sprains and bruises. This combination is for external use only. Don’t use if you are allergic or sensitive to lidocaine or menthol.

This medicine is used to:

  • numb an area of skin before a surgical procedure
  • prevent pain
  • treat painful nerve diseases
  • treat symptoms of hemorrhoids or rectal irritation
  • ease long term pain conditions
  • relieve pain and discomfort

This combination drug should not be used by those who have hypersensitivity to amide-type local anesthesia and menthol.

Side effects of lidocaine + menthol include the following:

  • Erythema
  • Edema
  • Abnormal sensations
  • Paleness
  • Redness
  • Alterations in temperature sensations
  • Itching
  • Rash
  • Burning sensation
  • Urticaria
  • Angioedema
  • Bronchospasm
  • Shock

Precautions

Avoid ear and eye contact.

Take extra precautions in infants less than 12 months old and who are receiving treatment with methemoglobin-inducing agents. Monitor methemoglobin levels on neonates and infants who are ≤3 months old.

Take special precautions if you have/are one of the following:

  • History of drug sensitivities
  • Liver disease
  • Patients w/ congenital or idiopathic methemoglobinemia
  • G6PD deficiency
  • Acutely-ill, debilitated or elderly patients

 

Interactions

This drug may potentially interact with Class I antiarrhythmics such as tocainide and mexiletine.

Overdose symptoms may include drowsiness, ringing in your ears, confusion, double vision, feeling hot or cold, tremors or shaking, seizure (convulsions), slow heartbeats, weak or shallow breathing, and loss of consciousness.

Since lidocaine topical is used when needed, you may not be on a dosing schedule.
