CYPROHEPTADINE

Do not use this drug:

• If you are allergic to any ingredient in Cyproheptadine
• If you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Consult your doctor first.
• To elderly with poor health
• If you have narrow-angle glaucoma; a peptic ulcer; an enlarged prostate; or bladder, stomach, or bowel blockage
• If you are taking a Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitor (MAOI) (eg, Phenelzine) or you have taken an MAOI within the last 14 days

Common side effects may include:

• Mild Drowsiness, Dizziness, Or Spinning Sensation;
• Feeling Restlessness Or Excited (Especially In Children);
• Sleep Problems (Insomnia), Tired Feeling;
• Numbness Or Tingly Feeling;
• Increased Sweating Or Urination;
• Blurred Vision;
• Appetite Changes;
• Dry Mouth Or Nose, Upset Stomach; Or
• Nausea, Diarrhea, Constipation.

Notify your doctor promptly if any of these symptoms persist or worsen.

Your doctor may have prescribed this medication because he or she judged that the benefit to you is greater than the risk of side effects.

Serious side effects may include:

• Confusion, Hallucinations, Unusual Thoughts or Behavior
• Seizure (Convulsions)
• Ringing in your Ears
• Feeling like you Might Pass Out
• Fast or Pounding Heartbeats
• Easy Bruising or Bleeding
• Urinating Less than Usual or not at All
• Pale or Yellowed Skin
• Dark Colored Urine
• Fever
• Unusual Weakness
• Severe Allergic Reaction

Seek immediate medical attention if you experience any of these serious side effects.

Precautions

Before taking this drug, tell your doctor or pharmacist:

• If you are allergic to Cyproheptadine, other antihistamines, or if you have other allergies.
• All prescription and nonprescription medications, vitamins, nutritional supplements, and herbal products you are taking or plan to take.
• Your medical condition such as:
  • Asthma
  • Glaucoma
  • Ulcers
  • Difficulty Urinating (Due to an Enlarged Prostate Gland)
  • Heart Disease
  • High Blood Pressure
  • Seizures
  • Overactive Thyroid Gland
• If you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding.
• If you are 65 years of age or older.
• If you are to undergo any surgery.

This drug may cause dizziness, drowsiness or blurred vision. Avoid activities requiring alertness or clear vision such as driving until you are sure you can perform such activities safely. Limit the use of alcohol and certain other medications that cause drowsiness.

Interactions

Drug interactions may either lessen the effectiveness of this drug or heighten the risk for severe side effects. It’s important to inform your doctor all the medication including prescription and non-prescription and herbal medicines you are taking or going to take.

Possible interactions with this drug are:

• Opioid Pain or Cough Relievers (such as Codeine, Hydrocodone)
• Alcohol
• Drugs for Sleep or Anxiety (such as Alprazolam, Lorazepam, Zolpidem)
• Muscle Relaxants (such as Carisoprodol, Cyclobenzaprine)
• Other Antihistamines (such as Cetirizine, Diphenhydramine)

Call emergency hotline if someone has overdosed and has serious symptoms such as passing out or trouble breathing.

Symptoms of overdose may include:

• Severe Drowsiness
• Seizures
• Widened Pupils

In children, excitement may occur first before loss of coordination, drowsiness, loss of consciousness, seizures.
